What are mobula rays?

One such species, The Munk’s devil ray (Mobula munkiana), belongs to the Mobulidae family and is the smallest in its genus. These mobula rays inhabit the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, ranging from the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) in Mexico, and down to Peru. They also frequent offshore islands such as the Galapagos, Cocos, and Malpelo.

Mobula ray migrations

Every spring and winter, mobula rays migrate in large numbers to the coastlines of Baja, particularly around La Ventana. They come to feed on plankton and find mates. You’ll often spot these filter-feeding rays forming massive groups. These gatherings are called a ‘fever,’ though many refer to them as schools because rays are a type of fish.

The smallest mobula ray species

Reaching a maximum wingspan of 1.3 meters, Munk’s devil rays are the smallest species within their genus.

Conservation status of the Munk’s devil fish

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as “vulnerable” to extinction. Despite legal protections, threats such illegal fishing, accidental by-catch, and irresponsible tourism continue to put pressure on their populations.
