Inspiring Young Ocean Heroes: International Whale Shark Day at Da Vinci School

international whale shark day - whale shark conservation

On August 26, in anticipation of International Whale Shark Day, which falls on August 30 of each year, La Paz Divers proudly celebrated International Whale Shark Day with an educational mission: to inspire a new generation of ocean protectors and raise awareness for whale sharks and their conservation.

Bringing Whale Sharks to the Classroom

Team members—Jay Gittens, Alejandra Corona, and Wendy Venegas—visited Da Vinci School in La Paz, Mexico, where we connected with 90 enthusiastic students aged 6–12, divided into three energetic groups. Each session was designed to be interactive and bilingual (English & Spanish), making it accessible and engaging for every child.

Learning Through Fun and Science

The students discovered fascinating facts about whale sharks:

  • They are the biggest fish in the ocean, not whales.
  • Each has a unique spot pattern, like human fingerprints.
  • Whale sharks are gentle filter feeders, eating plankton and tiny creatures.
  • Sadly, they are listed as Endangered due to fishing, boat strikes, and pollution.

To make the learning stick, we included fun activities:

  • A lively quiz to test their understanding of key points.
  • A creative “Draw Your Whale Shark” challenge where kids designed their own unique giants of the sea.

The Impact: Growing Awareness for Whale Shark Conservation

The children’s excitement was contagious—hands shot up with questions like: “How big is a baby whale shark?” and “Can they swallow a person?” (No, they can’t—they’re gentle giants!).

Events like this are a vital part of our commitment to whale shark conservation and marine conservation in general. By nurturing curiosity and respect for marine life at an early age, we help build a future where these majestic animals can thrive in the waters of La Paz and beyond.

What’s Next?

We plan to continue our outreach with more school visits and community projects in La Paz. Education is a cornerstone of conservation, and we invite teachers and schools interested in hosting similar events to contact us.

Join Us in Protecting Whale Sharks

Whether through responsible tourism, spreading awareness, or simply sharing what you’ve learned, you can be part of the movement for whale shark conservation.

Have a school or group that wants to learn more? Contact La Paz Divers to book an educational talk about whale sharks or some other ocean-related topic.
