The course is split into into three main components –

  • The knowledge development portion which is conducted in your own time online and is known as PADI e-learning

PADI Open Water Diver course schedule.

Online classes – Complete your PADI e-learning in your own time. Most students fit their course around other commitments and tend to spread their online classes out over the course of a week or so. If you have more time it is possible to complete the online comfortably in two days.

Confined water training – This consists of two days training in a pool in the centre of La Paz. Each day roughly lasts 4-6 hours depending on the size and speed of progression of each group. Sometimes an additional short day may be required to finish off the confined water component.

Open water training – This consists of four open water dives conducted over two days. These dives take place at Punta Arena beach on a beautiful rocky reef that is perfect for training purposes. If you choose the sea lions and shipwreck upgrade to your course then the second day of open water training (final day of your course) will be conducted from a boat in the Espiritu Santo National Park as described above. The boat departs from the malecon in La Paz and the day is roughly 7 hours from start to finish.

Final exam – This consists of a multiple choice exam consisting of 60 questions. As long as you pay attention to your e-learning course and additional training while with your instructor and assistants, passing the final exam will be a breeze.

Certification – Once you have met all of the course requirements, your instructor will process your certification and you will immediately receive your temporary PADI Open Water Diver e-card to your email address. Once you have this, you will be certified to dive globally within your level of training and experience. Your physical certification card will be produced at the PADI headquarters and sent to your chosen address.
